Ruinous discourtesy. That's the kindest thing I can say about how some congregants of a certain church recently paid their respects to a woman of high public standing outside her funeral.
God, if there is one, doesn't hate anything. After all, if God is the Creator and God created everything and God is infallible, what's there for God to hate?
And if God does hate something that God has created, does that mean that God can make a mistake? Does God get pissed off at what God thinks is a mistake; does God have temper tantrums? Does God make a sign that says GOD HATES MOSQUITOES and butt into the rituals of people who don't hate mosquitoes or don't really care one way or the other about mosquitoes so long as they're not being bitten by one right now? What about people who enjoy doughnuts? Would God heft a sign that says GOD HATES DOUGHNUTS and stand outside, say, a Tim Hortons, harassing customers who are moseying out of the store, chomping down on that first nummy bite of a squishy-warm honey-glazed? Would someone else come along who objects to the spelling of DOUGHNUTS on God's sign and heft his own sign that says GOD HATES DONUTS, YOU IDIOT ... and might a third person come along who's taken offence at the casual spelling of DOUGHNUTS on the second protester's sign ... and might that third person send another signal to the skies that says GOD HATES THE BASTARDIZATION OF THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE BY PEOPLE WHO CAN'T SPELL, and might a fourth person join the ruckus with GOD HATES PEOPLE WHO GET BETWEEN ME AND MY TIMMY'S SO GET OUTTA MY WAY! and a fifth with GOD HATES CANADIAN DONUTS, YOU DIMWIT! and a sixth with NO WAY, HOSEHEAD! GOD LOVES CANADIAN DONUTS, SO TAKE OFF, EH? and so on, ad infinitum ... ?
Who are we to presume that if there's a God, we have a clue about what God feels? -- It would appear that the young man in the photo whose sign says GOD HATES SIGNS understands this; his sign offers comic, ironic relief ... I wonder what church a person with his sensibilities might attend ... The Church Of The Subtle Tee Hee, perhaps ...
As for the child in the bright red pants who is holding the sign that says GOD HATES FAGS, Hell hath no fury like a child who's been programmed to hate. It might take a few years or decades of festering, but the fury will come. Hell also hath no fury like mine at the choice of an adult to put a sign like GOD HATES FAGS into a child's hands -- and the rot of willful ignorance into his soul.
I've laid my heart bare --

Your points are made with wit and style, Jaliya! And I agree with you that it is child abuse to raise a child in such hate. Fred Phelps has 3 or 4 estranged children from his hateful cult, one of whom (Nate) lives in Cranbrook BC now and blogs about his conflicted experiences breaking free of his family's legacy -- see http://n8rphelps.blogspot.com
Debra -- I thought of you, fellow Canuck, when I mentioned Tim Hortons :-)
Thanks for the link ... I hadn't known about the Phelps children but the info doesn't surprise me ... Every family has its detractors ...
"wit and style" ... thank you xo
I edited this piece to the nth degree ... Thinking, writing, reading, editing = making sure that my mind remains articulate ... as long as I'm making some sense of things I figure I'm OK ;-)
Hate's like anger, isn't it ... Sometimes you have to feel it, when you have been transgressed ... It's when we hang on to it that it ruins relations ... I can't do it -- and don't want to do it -- It is so exhausting, and completely clouds the mind ... It literally hurts my heart to hate someone ...
Oh you are so right Jaliya. Hate is the opposite of love and when we indulge in it, we are far from God. God perhaps agonizes for our painful hatred of others. Moving to compassion, and empathy, we start to feel better about ourselves and frankly the world. I agree, it is child abuse to put a child into such circumstances.
take solace in the fact that hate is its own punishment. phelps and his little bad of haters are probably the most miserable people on the face of the earth.
You are a brave warrior to point this out. How unfortunate that there are people in the world who use their “faith” as a way to spread hate and discrimination. so wrong, so dumb, so sad...thank you for telling it like it is...imagine that poor child being used like that .
I just don't have it in me to hate like that ... It is so poisonous when it's more than a brief and alerting expression ...
Having been on the receiving end of such hatred and being many years past it, I understand how too much hatred for too long corrodes a person ... It is terrible in its effects ...
The beginning was just funny, but the real point was in the final paragraph: I agree with you, not only that indoctrination is a form of child abuse but also that the poor kid will become a raging bigot in later life.
Thanks, Dennis ... Another possibility for that child is that he will turn and walk far, far away from his inheritance of bigotry ... I sure hope so. I know how difficult it is to do.
jaliya,
just stopped by to wish you a happy holiday. hope it's happy and healthy and safe and warm.
@nonnie ... thanks for your Christmas wishes ... To be honest, I am so glad it's over ...
I'm safe, warm, getting myself healthy, and do have occasional flashes of happiness :-)
bless you xo
How was your Christmas?
happpy new year, jaliya! glad to hear that you're taking care of yourself. those moments of happiness will get longer and more frequent.
i don't celebrate xmas, but i still had a very nice day, giving presents to the little twins who live next door (and watching their excitement at opening the giant box--it was a basketball set) and the little girl who lives next door to them.
I rather enjoyed that.
